Chapter Twelve
The inhospitable storm danced on the windshield as it ran away mockingly from the wipers who chased and retreated like a hesitant general. It didn't matter how hot the heater burned inside the car, all Patience could feel was the bitterness of the first snow. It didn't feel like the powder showcased in movies where children willingly laid themselves down to outline the picture of an angel. Instead, it felt like the knife of a chef, the points of needles running along all the softest parts of her pale body. Her hands were red and nose were red as she sniffled every other second, her consciousness feeling as if it would escape as she tried to stare at the road in front of them.
She wasn't sure how Doctor Amari could be driving so well in the dark and with relentless snow surrounding them. Patience had no idea where they were, and she had little ability to find out. Instead, she let her dreary eyes try to find a center in the storm as the howling of the wind whipped around them as the automatic windshield wipers sped up to reclaim the dance.
"It feels like we are out there in the storm, doesn't it?" The sudden words of her doctor surprised the young girl as she peered over slowly, her heavy eyes squinting to make out the woman who echoed the dance of the wipers. Her head bobbed back and forth as she played a song in her own head. Doctor Amari did not seem to mind that Patience couldn't find the words to answer.
Soon after, Patience found herself on a small flat-bottomed boat, rowing in unison with the woman who had become her accomplice. They were exhausted- it was just as difficult to get him out of the boat as it was to get him into the tub. They slowly rowed back toward the car, happy to receive a reprieve from the storm. Patience could not think of anything appropriate to say, she only held on to the sides as it rocked with the angry waves.
They must have hated the touch of the cold snow, they fought against it so harshly while the snow kept falling, not giving a damn about where it fell and rested on. If Julianne hadn't been watching her closely, she was sure her client would have been covered in the unforgiving ice. Her eyes stayed closed, and her nose continued to sniffle as she took deep breaths, the white flakes of the heavens resting upon her wild brown hair and long eyelashes.
They had used rocks from the shore they parked at to fill the gaps within the suitcases, weighing the boat down significantly. Julianne felt the vessel rise as the smallest of them was thrown overboard. It was so early in the morning that with such little light and so many people asleep, Doctor Amari was able to throw the next one over with little worry of being seen.
An arm, or a foot, maybe, sunk down to the bottom of the lake.
